Onboarding

Welcome

Thank you for checking out our efforts to build a more inclusive VR experience.

AltspaceVR Shutting Down

Sadly, AltspaceVR, the platform on which we built Blind Burners World will be closing!

We have until March 10th to show people around the current version of our world.

We WILL re-emerge on a new platform. Watch this space, and contact us to be updated when we find our new home.

We hope to see you soon.

And if you’re reading this in time and would like to visit us in our AltspaceVR home, read on.

Visiting Blind Burners World on AltspaceVR

To access Blind Burners World, please follow these steps:

  1. Check your computer meets AltspaceVR’s system requirements.
  2. Install AltspaceVR on your computer or VR headset.
  3. If you need assistance with 1 or 2 and/or would like a guide to join you on your tour, please contact us.

AltspaceVR includes a lot of great functionality. You can search for events and worlds, create your own avatar, and connect with friends.

Unfortunately, most of this functionality is provided in menus which are NOT accessible to screen reader users.

Our temporary and imperfect “solution” is to offer our community a personal “Zoom” session in which a screen reader user can share their screen with a sighted guide, who can assist with navigating AltspaceVR, and provide additional descriptions and assistance “in world”.

Limitations

VR is cutting edge technology. Even without accessibility issues, the experiences currently available are far from perfect. VR is still in its infancy. Glitches are extremely common.  Platform holders and developers frequently implement updates which can cause issues. VR worlds use a huge amount of processing and graphics power, and may cause your PC or Mac to slow or crash. The way in which audio sources can be placed in Unity is far less powerful than its visual capabilities.

We want to onboard more blind and low vision visitors so you can add your voice to ours in demanding more accessible VR experiences.

So we want to be very open. Your experience may at times be frustrating, and the technology may fail. We have done the best we can at this moment, to create VR experiences that are somewhat accessible by audio. And we will do our best to meet demand from people needing sighted assistance to navigate inaccessible processes.
